God of Carnage, winner of the 2009 Tony Award for Best Play, takes place over the course of one evening in which two Brooklyn couples (Alan and Annette; Michael and Veronica) sit down to discuss a playground incident. (The incident in question? Alan and Annette’s son hit Michael and Veronica’s son in the face with a stick, causing two broken teeth.) The four adults set out to discuss the incident, but as the night drags on and the liquor starts flowing, what starts as an evening of courtesy quickly devolves into something… much, much less courteous. Yasmina Reza’s hilarious, no-holds-barred play chips away at our veneers of politeness and exposes what’s really underneath.
